Technical Questions

What is the Open Call?

The Yield Giving Open Call was launched on March 21, 2023. This United States-based initiative will award gifts of $1 million to 250 community-led, community-focused nonprofit organizations that explicitly advance the voices and opportunities of those most vulnerable: individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles.

What types of organizations is the Open Call looking for?

The focus of this Open Call is community-led, community-focused nonprofit organizations with a strong track record of impact. In this context, “community” may refer to people who live in geographic proximity to one another who share resources or face similar challenges or to a group of people with a shared identity or need who may or may not live in close proximity to each other.

This Open Call seeks organizations whose main purpose is advancing the voices and opportunities of those most vulnerable, including individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination or other systemic obstacles.

What are the eligibility requirements for joining the Open Call?

The Open Call is open to nonprofit organizations from across the United States and U.S. Territories with annual operating budgets of no less than $1 million and no greater than $5 million for at least two of the last four fiscal years. To be eligible, 90 percent of an organization’s annual work must take place in the United States and/or U.S. Territories, and the organization must have been in existence for at least three years. Please refer to the RULES  for more information about eligibility. We encourage you to assess your fit for the Open Call by completing the Organizational Readiness Tool.

Applications must be submitted by:

  • An organization that has received a favorable tax determination letter (“Tax Letter”) from the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) that it qualifies as a public charity under section 509(a)(1), 509(a)(2) or 509(a)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (“IRC”), other than a Type III supporting organization, and the Tax Letter remains in effect.

  • A fiscally sponsored organization and the fiscal sponsor has a favorable Tax Letter from the IRS that remains in effect.

  • A private operating foundation that has received a favorable Tax Letter from the IRS that remains in effect.

Which communities does this Open Call aim to reach?

This Open Call aims to elevate organizations in the U.S. working with people and in places with the greatest need: communities, individuals, and families with access to the fewest foundational resources and opportunities. This includes, but is not limited to, marginalized, historically oppressed racial and ethnic groups, immigrants and migrants (including asylum seekers, displaced people), people affected by justice system involvement (including jails and prisons), survivors of crime, abuse, conflict, war, and/or disasters, LGBTQIA+ people, people from marginalized gender identities, people with disabilities, individuals and families who have limited assets and are income constrained (whether employed or unemployed), and people experiencing poverty in areas with low economic mobility and access to supporting resources.

Are organizations that work to meet community members’ basic needs eligible for this Open Call?

While acknowledging the critical importance of meeting basic needs like food, clothing, short-term emergency relief, and temporary shelter, this Open Call seeks organizations whose explicit purpose is to enable individuals and families to achieve improvement in their well-being through foundational resources such as access to health care, stable and affordable housing, education and job training, support for sustained employment, asset ownership, civic engagement, and other pathways. Among direct service providers, the strongest applicants will work primarily to furnish community members with services, resources, and opportunities to enable them to achieve this substantive improvement in their well-being. Organizations that work primarily to meet community members’ basic needs, including providing food, clothing, short-term emergency relief, and/or temporary shelter are unlikely to be a good fit for this Open Call.

Why is the Open Call focused on organizations with operating budgets between $1 million and $5 million?

A disproportionate amount of giving in the U.S. flows to larger organizations. This initiative seeks to help redress this inequity by elevating the work of smaller high-impact community-led, community-focused nonprofits.

Are organizations working outside the United States eligible for the Open Call?

To be eligible, an applicant organization must be based in the United States or U.S. Territories and at least 90 percent of their annual work must take place there. Organizations based outside of the U.S. and U.S.-based organizations conducting more than 10 percent of their work outside of the U.S. are not eligible for this Open Call.

How will the submissions be assessed?

Once the initial application submission deadline passes, the Open Call team will perform an administrative review to confirm that each submission meets the RULES and application requirements before advancing to the required Participatory Review.

During Participatory Review, each applicant organization will review the applications of five peer applicant organizations using the scoring rubric that outlines four criteria: equity-focused, track record, community leadership, and team capacity. Up to 1,000 of the top scoring organizations from Participatory Review will advance to the Evaluation Panel, where they will receive additional review and comments from five Evaluation Panel Reviewers. During Evaluation Panel Review, applications will be assessed using the same scoring rubric. 250 awardees will be selected from the top-scoring organizations to receive gifts of $1 million each.
